Claude Artifacts Explained: Docs, Slides and Dashboards
5 min read
Ask Claude for a long document inside an ordinary chat and you get a wall of text that scrolls out of sight as the conversation goes on. Ask for the same thing as an artifact and it opens in a panel beside the conversation, where you can read it, edit it and keep it. The difference sounds cosmetic until you try to revise a six-page draft through ten rounds of feedback.
This article explains what artifacts are, the templates Anthropic documents, how editing and exporting work, and the part people skip: where your data goes when an artifact stores things. The Complete Beginner's Guide to Claude mentions artifacts alongside projects and skills; here we go through them properly.
What counts as an artifact
Anthropic describes an artifact as content Claude creates that you would show to someone else: a design, a deck, a document, a dashboard or a small interactive tool. It opens beside your conversation. The help page lists documents, code snippets, single-page websites, images, diagrams and flowcharts, dashboards and small interactive tools.
Claude typically makes one when the content is longer than about fifteen lines, self-contained, likely to be edited or reused, and useful later. You can also ask for it directly: "Put this in an artifact."
Templates
For common formats Anthropic provides templates.
- Docs, Slides and Design are available on all plans.
- Dashboards are in beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
- Motion is in beta on Team and Enterprise.
Editing without losing your place
You have three ways to change an artifact.
- Ask Claude: "Shorten the second section and make the tone less formal."
- Edit it directly, for the templated artifacts.
- Highlight text in a doc and choose "Edit with Claude" to work on just that passage.
There is one behavior that protects your work. Editing an earlier message in the conversation creates a separate version of the chat with its own artifacts, so the earlier work is not lost. When you want to try a different direction, branch from an earlier message instead of overwriting.
Tip
For a long document, ask for changes to one section at a time and name the section. "Rewrite only the introduction" is safer than "improve this," which invites changes to parts you were happy with.
Getting it out of Claude
Exports depend on the type, according to Anthropic's help page.
| Artifact | Exports to |
|---|---|
| Docs | Word, PDF, Markdown, Google Docs |
| Slides | PowerPoint, PDF, Google Slides |
| Designs | .zip, PDF, PowerPoint, standalone HTML |
| Animations | MP4 |
Every artifact you create is also saved in the Artifacts tab in the Claude sidebar, so you can find it later without scrolling through old chats.
When something breaks
If an artifact shows an error, a "Try fixing with Claude" button copies the error details into a message for you. Anthropic is plain that success is not guaranteed, which matches experience: simple fixes work, and a tangled artifact sometimes needs you to describe what you expect to see.
Artifacts that talk to Claude and to your apps
This is the part that makes artifacts more than documents.
- AI-powered artifacts can call Claude directly, so people using the artifact can interact with Claude. No API keys are needed, and usage counts against each person's own plan limits.
- App connections: on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, artifacts can connect to apps you have connected to Claude, such as Asana, Google Calendar and Slack. Each person connects their own apps.
- Stored data: artifacts can keep data between sessions, either personal (private to each user) or shared (visible to everyone using the artifact). Storage is capped at 20 MB and accepts text only.
The builder decides where data goes
Anthropic warns that whoever builds the artifact chooses whether data goes into personal or shared storage. Before you type anything sensitive into an artifact someone else made, find out which kind it uses. If you build one, default to personal storage and say so in the artifact.
Sharing and privacy
Anthropic's page says artifacts start private to you and points to a separate sharing article for who can open a shared one and what they see. Before you share a link, treat it like sending the document itself: read it once as the recipient would, and remove anything you would not want them to see.
Requirements
Artifacts are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and in Claude Code on every plan that includes it. They require "Cloud code execution and file creation" to be turned on in settings. If artifacts are missing in your account, check that setting first. On Team and Enterprise plans it may be an administrator's decision.
Deciding where a long draft should live
Keep it in the chat when
- The answer is short and you will not revise it
- You are exploring options and will throw most away
- It is one step in a longer conversation
Ask for an artifact when
- You will edit it more than once
- You want to export it to Word, PowerPoint or Google Docs
- You want to find it again without scrolling
- You are building something others will use
Other assistants solve the same problem differently. ChatGPT Writing Blocks: The Canvas Replacement and Gemini Canvas: Building a Document Together show how those tools handle a draft that needs several rounds.
