# Claude vs Copilot When Your Work Lives in Microsoft 365

October 24, 2026 5 min read

---

The difference between Claude and Microsoft's Copilot, for someone whose day runs through Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, is not intelligence. It is geometry. Copilot sits inside the Office apps. Claude sits next to them and hands you files. Which shape fits depends on the kind of work you do most.

This article sets out the two shapes, what Anthropic documents about Claude's file-making, and a short test to run on your own documents. For Copilot's own capabilities, [Copilot Agent Mode in Word, Excel and PowerPoint](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/copilot-agent-mode-in-word-excel-and-powerpoint) and [Copilot Chat vs. Microsoft 365 Copilot](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/copilot-chat-vs-microsoft-365-copilot-explained) are the detailed references.

## Two shapes of help

**Acting in place.** Copilot's value in Office is that it works in the file you have open. It can change that document, sheet or deck where it is, so there is no copy-and-paste seam. [Copilot vs. ChatGPT for Office-Heavy Workflows](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/copilot-vs-chatgpt-for-office-heavy-workflows) explains this at length, and the same logic applies when you compare it with Claude.

**Producing a file you carry.** Claude works in its own window. You bring material in by pasting, uploading or connecting a service, and you take results out as a file or by copying them. The question is how good that carrying is.

Anthropic documents several pieces of that carrying:

- **Skills for Office formats.** Anthropic's own skills include enhanced document creation for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF. Skills are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans and require code execution to be enabled. See [Claude Skills: When a Skill Beats a Saved Prompt](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/claude-skills-when-a-skill-beats-a-saved-prompt).
- **Artifact exports.** Docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs. Slides export to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. Designs export as .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTML. See [Claude Artifacts Explained](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/claude-artifacts-explained-docs-slides-and-dashboards).
- **Connectors.** Claude can reach services you connect, using your permissions in them. Check the connectors directory for the specific Microsoft services available to you, because that list changes.

Copilot tends to fit when

- You edit an existing file and want the change made right there
- The work is many small actions inside Word, Excel, Outlook or Teams
- Your organization already licenses it and manages access
- You want one assistant that follows you across the Office apps

Claude tends to fit when

- You are producing something new from several sources
- The thinking is harder than the formatting
- You want a standing project with your reference files and rules
- You are fine finishing in Word or PowerPoint after it produces the draft

These lists describe where each shape saves effort, not what either tool is incapable of. Both change, and both can sometimes do what the other column lists.

## A test on your own files

1. Pick one document you would actually produce this week

A client report, a budget summary, a slide deck from notes. Not a toy example.
2. Do it once with Copilot inside the Office app

Note how many steps, what you had to fix, and how much of the formatting survived.
3. Do it once with Claude

Upload or paste the inputs, ask for the file, and open the result in the Office app. Note the same things: steps, fixes, formatting.
4. Compare the time to finished, not the first draft

The winner is whichever gets you to a document you would send, in fewer minutes, with fewer errors you had to hunt down.

Include one spreadsheet task, because spreadsheets expose the difference fastest. In-place editing handles a table you have open. A generated file can handle a rebuilt one. Whichever you use, check the numbers by hand on at least a few rows. A well-formatted wrong total is the worst kind of error.

## Access and cost are part of the comparison

Copilot is tied to Microsoft's licensing, which varies: a personal subscription, a work license and the free chat experience are different products with different abilities. [Microsoft 365 Personal vs. Family vs. Premium for Copilot](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/microsoft-365-personal-vs-family-vs-premium-for-copilot) sorts out the consumer tiers. Claude has its own plans, and some features, such as Research, are available on paid plans only.

For work files, the question that comes before any feature comparison is whether your employer allows each tool for that material. Many organizations approve Copilot because it runs inside their Microsoft tenant, and restrict others. Ask before you paste a client document into any assistant.

Check policy first

If your company has an approved AI tool, the productivity gain from a better alternative does not matter if using it breaks the rules. Check, then test.

## A practical way to use both

Plenty of people split by stage. Claude for the part that needs thought: structuring an argument, working through source material, producing a first version. Copilot for the part that needs the Office apps: reformatting, filling a template, adjusting a slide, summarizing a thread inside Outlook. The handoff is a file or a block of text, and [Using Two AI Assistants on One Task](https://ailearning.download/guides/en-us/using-two-ai-assistants-on-one-task-a-handoff-workflow) shows how to make it clean.
