Moving From ChatGPT to Claude: What Carries Over
6 min read
If you have spent months building a setup in ChatGPT, switching feels like moving house: you know roughly what you own, but not where it goes in the new place. Some things have an obvious equivalent. Some have a partial one. A few have none, and it is better to find that out before you cancel anything.
This article maps the common parts of a ChatGPT setup to what Claude offers, based on Anthropic's help pages, and marks which matches are close and which you should verify. It is not an argument to switch. If you are still deciding, Claude vs. ChatGPT for Writing: Run One Brief Through Both helps you decide on evidence. The Complete Beginner's Guide to Claude covers the basics.
A map of what moves where
| In ChatGPT you use | In Claude, the closest thing | How close |
|---|---|---|
| Custom instructions | Profile instructions (Settings, then "Your Claude") | Close: account-wide, you write them |
| Memory | Memory, with its own controls | Close in purpose, different in details |
| Projects | Projects, with project knowledge and instructions | Close |
| Custom GPTs | A project, plus skills for repeatable methods | Partial: no single equivalent |
| Canvas or writing blocks | Artifacts | Partial: different editing model |
| Deep Research | Research (paid plans) | Close in purpose |
| Connectors and apps | Connectors, including custom remote MCP ones | Close, with different directory contents |
| Scheduled tasks | Scheduled tasks exist in Claude Code | Verify for the chat app |
| Image generation | Not a main strength | Verify for your use |
| Voice mode | Not covered in this article | Verify |
"Close" means the idea transfers. It does not mean the screens or the limits match.
The pieces that map cleanly
Custom instructions to profile instructions. Anthropic describes profile instructions as account-wide, applying to all your conversations, set under your initials, then Settings, then "Your Claude." Paste the text of your ChatGPT instructions in as a starting point, then trim. Shorten it, and rewrite any "don't" as a "do," as The Biggest Claude Prompting Mistakes explains.
Projects to projects. Claude's projects are self-contained workspaces with their own chats, knowledge and instructions. Moving a project is manual: recreate its instructions, upload its files, run one test question. Setting Up a Claude Project You'll Actually Keep Using walks through it.
Research to Research. Claude's Research runs multiple linked searches and needs a paid plan with web search on. The brief habits you use for ChatGPT's deep research carry over. Claude Research covers the differences.
The pieces that map partly
Custom GPTs. There is no single Claude feature that matches a Custom GPT. What a GPT bundles, instructions, files and sometimes actions, is split in Claude between project instructions and knowledge, skills for repeatable methods, and connectors for outside services. For most GPTs that are really "instructions plus a few files," a project is the closest fit. For ones that follow a fixed method, a skill might be. Claude Skills: When a Skill Beats a Saved Prompt helps you tell which.
Memory. Both tools have it, and both let you view and delete. Claude's has specific scoping rules: each project has its own memory, and you can pause, reset or turn it off for a single chat. Do not assume your ChatGPT memory comes with you. Review what Claude has after a week and correct it. What Claude Remembers Between Conversations has the details.
Writing in a side panel. If you are used to ChatGPT's writing blocks or its older canvas, Claude's artifacts are the nearest thing, with a different way of editing and with export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs for documents. Claude Artifacts Explained covers it.
The pieces to verify before you rely on them
For image generation, voice and scheduled tasks in the chat app, the pages I used do not settle the question, and these areas change quickly. Check Anthropic's current help pages for your plan. If you depend on one of them daily, keep the ChatGPT subscription until you have confirmed Claude covers it. A tool you use for images or voice every day is not one to drop on a hunch.
Do not cancel first
Keep both subscriptions for the first month. Cancel only after a full month of real work has shown that nothing you rely on is missing.
A one-evening plan
- 1
Export what you can see, by hand
Copy your custom instructions, and the instructions and file list of each project you use. Put them in one note. It takes ten minutes and it is your backup.
- 2
Rebuild the instructions
Paste the custom instructions into Claude's profile instructions, then cut them in half. Keep the rules you are sure of.
- 3
Recreate your top two projects
Not all of them. The two you use weekly. Upload the files, write the instructions, and ask one test question whose answer you know.
- 4
Run your three most common tasks side by side
Use the ten-minute test so you move on evidence.
- 5
Review privacy settings in Claude
Look at the training and memory settings before you start putting real work in. Claude Privacy Settings: A Real Walkthrough lists them.
What changes in habits
A few small things will feel different in the first week. Claude's replies often read less list-heavy by default, which some people like and some find less skimmable, and either can be steered with a clear format instruction. Long documents and long conversations are a stated strength, so you may find yourself pasting more material per message. And instructions that said "never do X" work better as "do Y" in Claude, so rewriting them pays off.
A reasonable end state
Most people who try this end up using both: one for the work it handles best, the other for what it does better or where their files are. That is a fine outcome. The move is worth making if it gives you one clear advantage in your actual work, and it is not worth making just because the other tool is newer.
If you are comparing across all the main tools, Which AI Assistant for Which Job: A Decision Table offers starting points. And if you are leaving the other way, ChatGPT Projects vs. a Regular Chat and Custom GPTs vs. Projects describe what you would be moving.
